Roberts writes about wild animals as they live and die, without sentimental talking beasts. These stories follow a panther stalking in a dark ravine, young ravens, a strayed horse, swamp watchers, an indifferent porcupine, a skunk, a star-nosed mole, the she-bear Kroof and a mule that went to war at Aveluy.
