Laura Haviland, a Michigan Quaker, helped found an anti-slavery society and a school open to all races, sheltered fugitives on the Underground Railroad and went south at risk to her life. During and after the Civil War she nursed soldiers, visited prisons and hospitals and worked among freedpeople, recording it all at seventy-three.
A remarkable first-hand record of abolition and Reconstruction by one of its tireless workers. Download the free EPUB.
