Mary Allies opens with a short life of John of Antioch: his upbringing by his widowed mother Anthusa, his years as preacher at Antioch, his elevation to Constantinople, his clash with the Empress Eudoxia, the Synod of the Oak, and his exile and death. Translated passages from his homilies on faith, judgement and Christian life follow.
