Edward Henry Machin, the irrepressible Five Towns businessman of The Card, is restless in middle age at the top of Bleakridge. A dog-bite, a bank-note and a whim carry him to London, where he resolves to build and run a theatre of his own, and must deal with actors, managers, aristocrats and a formidable leading lady.
Bennett’s comic sequel to The Card, also published as The Regent, full of the Edwardian stage. Download the free EPUB.
