The novel opens with a funeral in Bridetown, a Dorset village whose people live by spinning flax and hemp in the local mills. Sabina, a mill girl, is drawn into a tangle of love and illegitimacy, while the gentle Mr. Churchouse and the men of the mill and the hackling shed quarrel over pride, money and violence.
A substantial regional novel by Phillpotts, best known for Dartmoor, here turning to the textile mills of west Dorset. Download the free EPUB.
