Major Malet-Marsac recalls his late friend John Robin Ross-Ellison and the extraordinary coincidences that bound him to a Subedar-Major of an Indian regiment and to a woman met by chance. The story moves through garrison life, inspections and regimental intrigue in British India, built from three lives that cross and part.
