Aimwell and Archer, two gentlemen who have spent their fortunes in London, arrive at an inn in Lichfield posing as master and servant, intending to snare an heiress. The plot tangles with highwaymen, the innkeeper’s daughter, the charitable Lady Bountiful, her daughter Dorinda and the unhappily married Mrs. Sullen, whose boorish husband gives the comedy its sting.
Farquhar’s last and best comedy, first staged in 1707 and still revived. Download the free EPUB.
