While the Theban general Amphitryon is away at war, Jupiter assumes his shape to spend a night with his faithful wife Alcmène, and Mercury takes the form of Amphitryon’s valet Sosie to guard the door. When the real master and servant come home, nobody can be sure who is who, and Sosie’s arguments with himself become the comic heart of the play.
