Cousin’s dictionary gives brief lives of more than sixteen hundred writers in English, from medieval chroniclers to his own contemporaries, with an appendix of living writers. Entries name birthplaces, schools and principal works, and for the larger figures add a sentence or two on character, circumstances and standing.
