J. Rufus Wallingford arrives in a small American city with a big appetite, a bigger wardrobe and no money, and promptly invents the Universal Covered Carpet Tack Company. Young Edward Lamb and canny old David Jasper are among the townsfolk drawn into a scheme of stock sales and fine dinners, as Wallingford plays one investor off against another.
