In 1872 the Austro-Hungarian ship Tegetthoff sailed into the Arctic under Karl Weyprecht and Julius Payer and was soon frozen fast in the pack. Payer recounts two winters of drift, the discovery and sledging survey of an unknown archipelago they named Franz Josef Land, and the long, desperate retreat over the ice.
One of the great polar narratives, by the officer and artist who led its land explorations. Download the free EPUB.
