The village of Colme is buzzing because the church bells are ringing for the christening of a schoolmaster’s baby, to the disgust of the clerk’s sharp-tongued wife. Around Ned Franks and his household unfold stories of a sailor’s return, crumbling almshouses, a curate’s visit, temptation and kindness, with a Jewish convert among the characters.
