The title poem, in three cantos with notes, is a romance set in the Catoctin Mountain country of Maryland among its Native inhabitants. Sands also includes a closet drama, The Misanthrope Reclaimed, in which spirits instruct a world-weary man named Werner, and a selection of shorter lyrics, prefaced by a plea for a national literature worthy of America.
A period piece of early American Romantic verse; its portrayal of Native life is that of its time. Download the free EPUB.
