The narrator, an orphan shivering through a gloomy November at a cheerless boarding school, passes into the care of a reserved and commanding guardian. Through country-house parties, rivalries and a winter in New York, she grows into a young woman and is drawn into a romance shadowed by misunderstanding and secrets.
