Set in Charleston in the 1850s, the novel follows Tom Swiggs, a ruined drunkard, and George Mullholland through the city’s prisons, Madame Flamingo’s house and its high and low society. In a long preface Adams says he wrote it to cure the ‘malady’ of South Carolina’s fire-eating chivalry.
A Northern-minded satire of slaveholding Charleston; its views and language are those of the 1850s. Download the free EPUB.
