Annette Harcourt, an orphan raised by her strict grandmother, is a clever, wilful child whom her neighbours expect to come to no good. The novel follows her schooling, her struggles with prejudice in a northern city and the community of friends and mentors who help her find purpose, while debating work, thrift and racial progress.
