Drawing on legal papers untouched for two centuries, Marie Hay retells the extraordinary history of Wilhelmine von Grävenitz, who came to the court of Duke Eberhard Ludwig of Württemberg in the early eighteenth century. Through intrigue, play-acting, a mock marriage and accusations of witchcraft, she made herself mistress of the duke and of his duchy.
