Widowed and determined, Elizabeth Allston Pringle managed her family’s rice plantations in Georgetown County, South Carolina, at the end of the nineteenth century. Her diary records floods, failing crops, hired labour, new experiments with alfalfa and the daily life of the Black families who worked the fields; her outlook and dialect renderings are those of a former slaveholding family.

An absorbing document of the post-war Lowcountry, introduced by Owen Wister. Download the free EPUB.
