In this lecture to the Royal Institution, Wells contrasts two types of mind: the majority that thinks mainly of the past and judges by precedent, and a newer kind that looks forward and judges by consequences. He argues that the future can be known in broad outline, much as geology reconstructs the past, and ends with a vision of humanity’s possible greatness.

A short, influential essay in which Wells all but invents futurology. Download the free EPUB.
