The Swiss physician Johann Georg Zimmermann, best known as Frederick the Great’s doctor in his last illness, considers what time alone does to the mind and the heart. He weighs the advantages of retirement in exile, old age and the approach of death against the dangers of melancholy and misanthropy, with a life of the author in front.
