The story opens in June 1788 with a band of travellers crossing the plains of southern India, and moves into the court and camps of Tipu Sultan as the Mysore wars gather. Muslim and Hindu characters, captive Englishmen and a tale of devoted love unfold against sieges, raids and the sultan’s ambitions.
Taylor, who served in India for decades, wrote with unusual knowledge of its people; the novel follows his Confessions of a Thug. Download the free EPUB.
