Thomas Wingfold, a conscientious young curate, is jolted by a sceptic’s question into realising that he does not know whether he believes what he preaches. Guided by the dwarf Polwarth, he begins an honest search, while Helen Lingard, a self-assured young woman of his parish, discovers that her beloved brother Leopold is hiding a crime.
