On the glass-making island of Murano, the workmen of Angelo Beroviero distrust Zorzi, a Dalmatian of unknown origin who may be a heretic and is plainly in love with their master’s only daughter, Marietta. The glass-workers form an almost noble caste that no outsider may join, and Zorzi’s skill, his secrets and his love put him at odds with guild, family and Venetian law.
