From 1853 Hawthorne served as American consul at Liverpool, and his notebooks record what he saw: cathedrals and country houses, London streets, English dinners and manners, and the writers he met, among them Martin Tupper in his library. Edited after his death, they give his candid, sometimes prickly view of the old country.
