The narrator is a handkerchief of the finest linen, grown in France, embroidered by a poor seamstress and sold to New York, where it passes into the hands of a fashionable young lady. From this unusual vantage it watches the vanity, extravagance and money-worship of the city’s society in the 1840s, while keeping its sympathy for the needlewoman who made it.
A rare comic satire from the author of The Last of the Mohicans, sharp on American snobbery and still amusing. Download the free EPUB.
