Modelled on Greek tragedy, this verse drama tells of the hunt for the boar sent by Artemis to ravage Calydon, the huntress Atalanta, and Prince Meleager, whose life is bound to a brand that his mother Althaea once snatched from the fire. The choruses, including ‘When the hounds of spring are on winter’s traces’, are among the most musical in English.
