The title story, written about eighteen months before the First World War, is the log of a fictional captain whose handful of submarines brings Britain to the edge of starvation. Around it are other tales, among them ‘The Horror of the Heights’, about an airman who meets living things in the upper air, ‘One Crowded Hour’ and ‘The Surgeon of Gaster Fell’.
A late Doyle collection that ranges from naval prophecy to weird fiction, worth reading for the airborne terrors alone. Download the free EPUB.
