Ernst Weiss was a Prague-born German-language novelist, physician, and close friend of Franz Kafka whose fiction has remained largely in the shadow of his more celebrated contemporaries. Associated with Expressionism, Weiss wrote psychologically intense novels and shorter prose that explored illness, obsession, and human fragility with a doctor’s clinical eye and an artist’s sensibility.

Der Fall Vukobrankovics is a lesser-known work whose precise narrative details are difficult to verify independently, but it reflects Weiss’s characteristic engagement with case studies, psychology, and moral complexity.
