Set in the Russia of Alexander I, the novel follows the conspirators of the secret society that would rise against the tsar in December 1825, and the brilliant, dangerous actress Zeneida, who moves between them and the imperial court. Snowbound journeys, aristocratic orgies and plots of love and war unfold beneath the coming revolt.
