Two young friends, Aurelian and Hippolito, arrive in Florence during a season of wedding festivities and attend a masquerade, where each falls for a lady and, for reasons of mischief, they exchange names. The swapped identities collide with a family feud and an arranged marriage. Congreve’s preface famously distinguishes the novel, which delights with things near at hand, from the romance.
