The great Sanskrit poet Kalidasa tells how the gods, oppressed by a demon, need a son of Shiva to lead their armies. Uma, daughter of the Himalaya, is born to win the ascetic god; Kama, the god of love, is burned to ashes by Shiva’s glance; and Uma undertakes fierce penance through storm and winter. Ralph Griffith renders the Kumara Sambhava into rhymed English verse.
