Sara Teasdale chose the poems that would have pleased the child she was and the boy who was her playmate, and kept the book small on purpose. Coleridge’s Kubla Khan, Keats’s Meg Merrilies, Shelley’s Hymn of Pan, the Battle Hymn of the Republic and ballads and lyrics old and new make up a selection of music and magic rather than moral lessons.
