An English painter who was a student in Paris in 1891 traces how the Impressionist idea grew, from the forerunners Jongkind and Boudin through Manet to the group exhibitions of 1870 to 1886. He writes in turn about Monet, Pissarro, Renoir and Sisley, and argues for the debt the movement owed to Turner, Constable and English landscape painting.
