Wood’s 1906 compendium narrates the careers of Native leaders from Powhatan and Massasoit through King Philip, Pontiac, Joseph Brant, Red Jacket, Little Turtle and Black Hawk, down to Chief Joseph and Geronimo. Speeches, treaties, wars and anecdotes fill the chapters, and the book is dedicated to Theodore Roosevelt; it also includes a speculative discussion of where the Indians came from.
Its sympathies are real but its assumptions are those of 1906; read it as a period survey rich in quoted oratory. Download the free EPUB.
