Johnstone served as political agent in Manipur and among the Naga hill peoples in the 1870s and 1880s. He describes the Manipuri court and bazaar, the hill tribes, frontier politics and military affairs, written partly in memory of his wife, whose diary of their life in India first suggested the book.
A first-hand record of a little-known frontier, told with the outlook of a British official. Download the free EPUB.
