Freddie Brent, orphaned son of a drunkard, is taken in by Miss Hester Prime, a grim and dutiful spinster who decides he shall become a minister. Raised in narrow piety in a small Ohio town and pushed into the pulpit, Fred must work out whether the call he has been given was ever truly his.
Dunbar’s 1898 novel of religion and conscience, drawn partly from his own struggle over a ministerial calling. Download the free EPUB.
