In the town of Newbern, the printer Dave Cowan’s twin sons start out side by side in a photographer’s window, one blandly composed, the other scowling with mussed curls. Separated as boys, one is raised among the town’s genteel Whipples and the other grows up rough and wandering. Wilson follows both into adulthood with an eye for small-town snobbery.
