A royalist exile who spent three years in Barbados in the late 1640s, Ligon describes the island in detail: its plants and animals, food and drink, the planters’ houses, and above all the new sugar works, with careful accounts of costs and profits. He also describes the enslaved Africans and indentured servants on whose labour the system ran, in the terms of his time.

A foundational eyewitness source on the rise of the Caribbean sugar plantation and its slavery. Download the free EPUB.
