In 1917 two young cousins in the Yorkshire village of Cottingley photographed what they said were fairies by a stream, and Arthur Conan Doyle, by then a committed spiritualist, took up their cause. He sets out the photographs, their reception, a clairvoyant’s visit to the glen and theosophical views of fairies. The cousins admitted in the 1980s that the photographs were faked.
