In 1797–98 a group of young Tory wits led by George Canning and John Hookham Frere ran the Anti-Jacobin, a weekly that mocked the friends of the French Revolution. Charles Edmonds collects their poems, among them The Friend of Humanity and the Knife-Grinder and the burlesque play The Rovers, with notes on their authorship, targets and Gillray’s illustrations.
