Mary Sturgeon retells the stories of the heroines of Homer, Greek tragedy and the Aeneid from the best translations, with little critical comment. Helen, Andromache, Penelope, Circe, Calypso and Nausicaa lead into Clytemnestra and Electra of Aeschylus and the women of Sophocles, Euripides and Virgil.
