In 1827 the transport ship Malabar carries a cargo of convicts to Van Diemen’s Land, among them Rufus Dawes, condemned under a false name for a crime he did not commit. Through typhus, mutiny and the brutal settlements of Macquarie Harbour, Port Arthur and Norfolk Island, he endures the whole machinery of transportation.
The great Australian novel of the convict system, harrowing and grounded in Clarke’s study of the colonial records. Download the free EPUB.
