Between 1858 and 1864 Livingstone led a government expedition up the Zambesi and its tributaries, reaching Lake Shirwa and Lake Nyassa. Drawing also on his brother Charles’s notes, he describes rivers, rapids, crops, animals and peoples, his talks with villagers on religion and death, and above all the devastation the slave trade was causing in the interior.
First-hand Victorian exploration with a campaigning purpose, essential for the history of Malawi and the anti-slavery cause. Download the free EPUB.
