Octave Feuillet was a highly successful French novelist and playwright of the Second Empire era, celebrated for his refined, sentimental romances depicting the aristocracy and upper bourgeoisie. Le Roman d’un jeune homme pauvre, published in 1858, was his greatest popular success, following a young nobleman who has lost his fortune and must work as a steward while concealing his true identity.
