The Mughal princess Lalla Rookh travels from Delhi to Kashmir to marry a king she has never seen, and on the way a young poet, Feramorz, entertains her with four tales in verse: ‘The Veiled Prophet of Khorassan’, ‘Paradise and the Peri’, ‘The Fire-Worshippers’ and ‘The Light of the Haram’. The pompous chamberlain Fadladeen criticises each one in prose interludes.
