In the title story the narrator, visiting his architect friend Robert Brindley, is taken to a football match where the local hero plays on while momentous things happen at home. The other stories are set in and around the Staffordshire Potteries Bennett called the Five Towns, full of shrewd tradesmen, dutiful daughters, family quarrels and quiet comedies of money and pride.
