Opening with a biographical sketch of Harte’s years as miner, teacher and San Francisco journalist, this collection gathers his patriotic Civil War poems such as John Burns of Gettysburg, the frontier dialect ballads of Truthful James, Her Letter and its answer, and verse of Spanish California and the Sierra camps.
Lively frontier verse from the author of The Luck of Roaring Camp; some dialect pieces, notably the ‘Heathen Chinee’ poem, carry 1870s racial attitudes. Download the free EPUB.
