Published in 1890, four years after her death in Amherst, this was the first book of Emily Dickinson’s poems to reach print. Her friends Mabel Loomis Todd and Thomas Wentworth Higginson chose the poems, grouped them under Life, Love, Nature, and Time and Eternity, and supplied titles and a preface describing a recluse who wrote with no thought of publication.
The editors smoothed some of her punctuation and rhymes, but this is how America first met its strangest great poet. Download the free EPUB.
