On the banks of the Saco, Waitstill Baxter keeps house for her harsh, close-fisted father, the deacon who wore out his earlier wives, while protecting her lively younger sister Patty from his tempers. Across the river lives Ivory Boynton, whose family was broken by a revivalist’s craze, and the slow courtship between them runs through village gossip and New England winters.
