Edward III claims the French crown and sets out for war, but first falls hopelessly for the Countess of Salisbury, whose virtue shames him back to duty. The play then follows the campaigns in France: the Black Prince’s trial by battle at Crécy, the siege of Calais and its six citizens, and the capture of King John at Poitiers.
